The quickest check is your water meter. SA Water’s test is simple: take a reading, use no water inside or outside for about an hour or two, then read it again. If the numbers have moved, water is going somewhere.
SA Water lists these as signs of a leak:
A running toilet cistern is the most common household leak, and SA Water says it can waste up to 260 litres a day.
To check, add a few drops of food colouring to the cistern. If colour shows in the bowl without flushing, the cistern is leaking.

SA Water looks after leaks between the water main and your meter. The meter belongs to SA Water, so don’t try to fix it yourself. Report it on SA Water’s 24/7 Faults and Outages Map.
Anything on your side of the meter is your plumbing. SA Water recommends a licensed plumber to find and repair it.
We start by confirming there’s a leak and narrowing down where it is, then find it and repair it. We inspect first and give you a fixed, upfront price before any work starts.
